DTF vs. DTG

Two ways to put a design on a shirt, and how to pick between them

DTF and DTG are the two garment-printing methods we use most, and they get compared to each other a lot because they solve the same problem in different ways. Neither one is strictly "better" — they land in different spots on color, feel, and fabric compatibility, and which one is right depends on what you're printing and what it's going on. Here's how each one actually works, and how they stack up.

DTF — Direct-to-Film

DTF doesn't print onto the shirt directly. It prints onto a special film first, then that film gets heat-pressed onto the garment. A printer lays down full-color ink on the film, backs it with a layer of white ink so the colors stay opaque, coats the wet ink with a hot-melt adhesive powder, and runs it through a heater to cure that adhesive. From there we place the film on the shirt and press it — the adhesive melts into the fabric fibers, and peeling the film away leaves the design behind.

The result is vibrant, high-contrast color, especially on dark shirts, with sharp edges that hold up well on fine detail and small text. Because the design sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking into it, it has a bit more texture than DTG — closer to vinyl, but thinner and more flexible. That trade-off is also what makes DTF so versatile: it works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and pretty much anything else that can take a heat press.

DTG — Direct-to-Garment

DTG skips the film entirely and prints straight onto the shirt, the same basic idea as an inkjet printer working on paper instead of fabric. The shirt is pre-treated so the ink bonds properly, a DTG printer sprays full-color ink directly into the fibers (again backed with white on dark shirts), and the shirt is heat-pressed to cure it.

Because the ink goes into the fabric instead of sitting on top of it, DTG prints feel soft — almost like they're part of the shirt rather than printed on it. That makes it the strongest option for photo-quality images, smooth gradients, and skin tones, and it's the closest thing to a "no texture" print we offer. It performs best on 100% cotton; results on polyester and blends are less consistent.

Color quality

DTF gives you the most vibrant, punchy color and the strongest contrast, thanks to that white ink layer sitting behind the design — great for logos, bold graphics, and anything high-contrast. DTG gives you the most natural, realistic color, because the ink is absorbed into the fibers instead of sitting on top — better for gradients, shading, and photographic detail. Short version: if you want the design to pop, pick DTF. If you want it to look natural, pick DTG.

What each one looks like up close

Zoomed in, the difference is easy to see. DTF's ink sits on top of the fabric as a thin film, so the edges have a slight, consistent texture you can feel with a fingertip. DTG's ink soaks straight into the fibers, so up close it looks like the color is part of the shirt rather than printed on it.

Durability

DTF's adhesive layer bonds the print to the fabric and holds up consistently across almost any material — figure 50 to 100+ washes when it's pressed correctly, with a small risk of edge wear over a long lifespan since it's technically a film. DTG's durability depends more on the process: pretreatment quality, curing time and temperature, and the shirt material all matter. Done right, DTG lasts as long as screen printing and won't peel, since the ink lives inside the fibers — but it can fade gradually if any part of that process wasn't dialed in. DTF is the safer bet if you want consistency without worrying about process variables; DTG can match it, but only when everything upstream was done correctly.

Which one should you pick?

If your design is a bold logo, needs to work on a dark or non-cotton shirt, or you want the most consistent result regardless of fabric, go with DTF. If your design is a photo, a gradient, or something you want to feel like part of the shirt rather than printed on it — and it's going on cotton — DTG is the better call.
